The Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Mubende District, Abubaker Birungi, has officially launched the construction of a modern canopy at the district’s main entrance, along with a gate at the rear, in a project valued at Shs 272 million.
Speaking at the launch, Birungi commended the district leadership for prioritizing infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening security and improving the overall appearance of the district headquarters.
He noted that the development will enhance access control, enable easy identification of staff, and ultimately improve service delivery.
“This project will not only beautify the district but also address security concerns. With personnel stationed at the gates, cases of theft—especially of motorcycles—will significantly reduce,” he said.
The project will be implemented in two phases. Phase one, estimated at Shs 130 million, will cover the construction of the canopy’s structural shell and roofing. The second phase will complete the remaining works, including installation of a rear gate, drainage systems, electricity, surveillance cameras, and office equipment such as computers.
Moses Kagambagye, Secretary for Production, Marketing, and Natural Resources, noted that the initiative was informed by benchmarking visits to other districts that have successfully implemented similar infrastructure.
“We are taking a leaf from others to ensure better organization, security, and proper identification at our district headquarters,” he said.
The Acting Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, Edison Ssali, emphasized that the project is a direct response to growing security challenges at the premises.
He called on the contractor to deliver quality work within the stipulated timeframe, stressing the importance of durability and value for money.
“We expect timely completion without compromising standards. This is an investment that must stand the test of time,” he said, adding that district teams are ready to provide the necessary support to ensure successful implementation.
He also underscored the importance of promoting local content by sourcing construction materials locally and employing local unskilled labor.
Acting District Engineer Patrick Mbabaali reiterated that the project will significantly improve security and infrastructure at the district, urging the contractor to uphold high-quality standards throughout the construction process.
